Domestic Policy

Meloni: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking at the national assembly of Noi Moderati, emphasized the importance of a politics “with heart,” grounded in seriousness, consistency, and courage. She reiterated that the centre-right is a community born to govern and defended the reform of the premiership as a tool to ensure democratic stability. Meloni praised the contributions of Maurizio Lupi and party activists, highlighting the value of quiet, collective work. She then claimed credit for the government’s achievements, particularly citing investments supporting families. The Prime Minister also recalled the attention given to the third sector, considered a fundamental ally.

Strike: The nationwide strike announced in recent days saw participation far below expectations, with low turnout across multiple sectors—from metalworkers and public sector employees to local and rail transport. The day was also marked by an incident of tension in Turin, where approximately fifty protesters stormed the offices of La Stampa, vandalizing premises and prompting cross-party political condemnation. Law enforcement identified 34 participants and initiated investigations into the incident.

Foreign Policy

Ukraine Conflict: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s visit to Moscow and the dismissal of powerful Ukrainian adviser Andriy Yermak have highlighted growing instability surrounding the Ukraine conflict. The Hungarian premier strengthened ties with Putin, reopening a critical front for the European Union and fueling speculation about future talks with the United States in Budapest. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, Yermak was removed following an anti-corruption investigation that risks affecting international negotiations. Against this backdrop, new developments are emerging regarding the sabotage of Nord Stream and European tensions over the management of frozen Russian assets.

Pope Leo in Turkey: In Iznik (Turkey), during an ecumenical celebration, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the value of the Nicene Creed and the importance of Christian unity, warning against reducing Christ to a mere charismatic figure. Together with Patriarch Bartholomew, the Pope called for dialogue and rejected using religion to justify violence. The absence of the Russian Orthodox Church underscored tensions linked to the war in Ukraine. The day concluded with meetings with the local Catholic community and a visit to the elderly.

Economy and Finance

Budget Measures: Economically, the government must resolve three key issues: Fratelli d’Italia’s proposal regarding state ownership of Bankitalia’s gold reserves, revision of amendments to the Budget Law, and the nation’s slightly recovering economic situation. The gold amendment—covering 2,452 tonnes—risks violating the central bank’s independence and European constraints. Meanwhile, the governing majority is revising other amendments concerning taxes, work incentives, and fiscal measures, seeking adequate funding. The economy grew by 0.1% in the third quarter, with rising consumption and investment and inflation stable at 1.2%.

Banking Risk: Milan’s public prosecutor is investigating Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone, Francesco Milleri, and Luigi Lovaglio for alleged coordinated operations in takeovers involving MPS, Mediobanca, and Generali. According to prosecutors, Delfin and Caltagirone allegedly acted in concert to consolidate their power in the financial sector, concealing agreements and influencing key transactions such as the placement of 15% of MPS shares in 2024.
